Evidence-based analysis of London’s industrial land

London, UK | Winter 2017 | Collaborative academic project | The Bartlett, UCL
This evidence based report reviews the local economy for a study area in East London. This information can be used to inform future development and planning decisions. We first thoroughly reviewed the local planing policy context and conducted an audit with interviews of local businesses to determine trends. The information was compiled and we came to the following conclusions:
- These industrial sites play an integral role in providing vital services to Greater London as well as beyond. In response to the need for housing in London, planning policy focuses on redeveloping industrial land for residential or mixed use, however industrial land is being released faster than planned.
- Many businesses in the study area rely on sectoral clustering as a means of building relationships and increasing industry cohesiveness and location is critical to these networks. There is evidence of redevelopment having a negative impact on these economies.
These conclusions were used to develop an policy and design based economic plan for the study area. Utilizing the river as a key asset, residential led development will begin to shape a new identity for the area. Intensified industrial areas will allow the existing clusters and local businesses to remain while allowing for new businesses to grow.
